diablo 2 - barbarian class?

I recently started playing diablo 2 again cuz i saw diablo 3 was coming out . my ? is how can i equip a shield in one hand and equip a two handed axe in the other?? the book says that powerful barbarians can do this so i need to know how powerful i have to be im currently going into the spider cave in kurast and my character is at level 21 so how do i do it??? and its not the expansion set its the first version that came out. any info will help a bunch!! Thank you!!

You can do this with a two-handed sword, but not a two-handed axe or mace.
Hope this helps!

Only advancing the abilities you use has already been done in Runequest/Call of Cthulhu.I've crewed in a LARP where playing cards were used to simulate certain feats/powers and it worked well. A system using Tarot-like cards (similar to those illustrating Justin's post) might offer specific powers/abilities which IIRC was used in the old Mage adventure “Loom of Fate”.For development, you'd probably be working to particular archetypes (character classes/ auspices/etc.) rather than going for a unique character. I could see this working well with progression templates as seen in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay/Dark Heresy etc. Some work required but would be fun.Another possibility might allow you to use special maneouvers or social rewards you can cash in at a later date (similar to those Rings of Gnome Friendship you'd find in The Temple of Elemental Evil who marked you as the gnomish equivalent of Chuck Norris) but these would have to be considered by the player as a reward.Player-led reward systems don't always work – I've seen too many games where the reward went round the table rather than go to the deserving. Player inspired complications where a bonus might be given for getting out of a complication – well maybe. Sort of a “Yes – and…” shared narrative spiel.

yah man I don't know what to say about it, particularly because I am inherently skeptical when it comes to information released by corporations, I tend to think marketing spin. They say this isn't a new edition largely by stateing that everything is compatible and still using the same mechanics, which is true. but I guess it also comes down to what you would consider constituting a new edition? If it is re-releasing new versions of your core classes with altered progression mechanics and a reversion to a focus on modified melee basic attack for martial characters…then this seems like a new edition but who knows, as they say it is just different builds. I think we will have to wait until after the 10 books in the Essential line are out and they go back to regular products. I think then we will see which design philosophy reins supreme when they release new character classes, and if they do re-print the player's handbook what content will be in there.

sometimes you get the sense that the Essential's design is maybe what 4th edition should have been all along, but it took a while for them to figure it out. it is like maybe they realized they need to reign things in a little bit as when each class has like a hundred powers and coupled with hundreds of feats it can get a bit difficult to manage without breaking or unbalancing aspects of the game and requiring constant errata, maybe even difficult to do and create new things in such a system.

who knows? all I know is that they could never ever never ever call it a new edition, no matter what, or people would just shit themselves in fits of rage.

on a side note I just picked up the Dark Sun material and it is pretty cool, I think my next campaign will be set in the world of Athas.

Wow, I didn't miss her. Although, c'mon, her killing the bunny & reporting the hurricanes was good stuff. I don't think she's needed. I love that show. I actually have to pause cause I'm laughing so hard!!
